Mets win first game of the season 6-1

Todays box score is from Metsblog.com

  • Tom Glavine wins his second consecutive Opening Day for the Mets, and 9 wins away from his 300th win. He gave up one run on six hits in six innings, walking only one and striking out two.
  • Paul Lo Duca led the offense, going 2 for 5, driving in three runs, and scoring one. He also made a fine tag at home to nail David Eckstein off a Beltran outfield assist.
  • Carlos Delgado was 1 for 5, with a 2 RBI double.
  • Shawn Green was 2 for 4, with a run scored.
  • David Wright was 1 for 4, and made a great play in the first inning to turn a double play.
  • Carlos Beltran was 1 for 4 scoring a run and driving in a run, he also threw out David Eckstein at home.
  • David Newhan, pinch hitting for Heilman in the 9th, singled and scored a run.
  • Jose Reyes turned two double plays and was 1 for 4 with a run scored. He was picked off first in what appeared to be a balk but was apparently legal.
  • Pedro Feliciano pitched the 7th inning and gave up 1 hit, no runs.
  • Joe Smith came in the 8th and gave up a hit, a walk, and struck out one.
  • Aaron Heilman came in to relieve Smith, and was saved by a great play by Jose Valentin that he turned into a spectacular double play.
  • Billy Wagner gave up two hits in the 9th but settled down to induce a pair of flyouts.
Todays game was a terrific game to watch. If you saw it you got to see great pitching, great defense, and great offense from The Mets. I think this game was a message to the rest of the league that you can say all you want before the season starts but when the season begins The Mets are still the best team and the team to beat. Moises Alou also made a great diving play, and if he didn't make that play Glavine probably gives up 2-3 more runs. Looking ahead The Mets will be facing RHP Kip Wells, and Braden Looper in the next two games. These guys are not quality pitchers and I expect a lot more offense off of these guys. Look for The Mets to get into the Cardinals pen early and sweep the series.
